Chetumal real estate offers dreamy beachfront living close to town, and the convenience of international flights

Chetumal and its beachfront houses are a hidden treasure of the Mexican Caribbean.

Chetumal, “the place of red trees,” combines Caribbean atmosphere with features of a frontier city. It’s relatively quiet and peaceful, even though the town boasts duty-free area and administrative offices befitting the capital of Quintana Roo.

Location

Located on the bay of Chetumal, the town is on a sheltered inlet of the Caribbean Sea at the mouth of the Rio Hondo, which forms the border between Mexico and Belize.

What is the most remarkable about Chetumal is its strategic location, making it an excellent international hub: Chetumal Airpor thas flights to major cities in Mexico, and Belize City international airport is located only 1.3h away. There’s also an option to fly into Cancun or Merida and take a bus from the airport.

What is there to do in Chetumal?

Beautiful Mayan ruins, coral barrier reef, tropical jungle and the border to Belize are all near by. Tourist attractions are still not crowded, making them even more appealing. The population is multinational, and Spanish is spoken alongside with Maya, Creole and Lebanese Arabic.

In the center, there is modern Mayan Culture Museum, offering a glimpse into the lives of ancient inhabitants of these lands. The Boulevard Bahia is a charming long walk by the sea, offering restaurants, bars, parks and sculptures. The road continues to Calderitas, a fishing village with many seafood restaurants and a marina with boats going to the island Tamalcab and to the ruins of Mayan city Oxtankah, 7 km north of Calderitas. This ancient Maya city offers Bee Square surrounded by five buildings, Column Square with Palace, as well as small temples, palaces and plazas.

If you are staying in Chetumal, near Laguna Guerrero, in the National Park Bahia de Chetumal, you will find a Sanctuary of Manatees, the vegetarian sea cows.

What's there outside of Chetumal?

Other Mayan ruins can be reached by car: Kohunlich (65 km away), Dzibanché (75 km), Kinichná (2 km from Dzibanché) and Chacchoben (60 km). Calacmur (235 km), the mysterious Mayan town in the middle of the jungle, located towards the interior of the country, will impress with majestic buildings and lush tropical nature.

If you venture outside, visit Cenote Azul and Bacalar, an amazing lagoon of many colors, or go for a visit to Mahahual, a beautiful laid-back Caribbean beach town that is facing growth and increased investements, mostly due to a convenient location as a cruise ship port.

Expats in Chetumal

There is an expat community that is calling Chetumal their home. The town offers schools, shops, theaters, restaurants and hospitals, so you can get all the convenience of a town but be on the beach.
